Speedy wideouts are the biggest benefits of moving into the slot since they have an easier time getting open in the field when their route isn't covered by a cornerback or linebacker. The only non-speedy wide receiver on the list who benefits from more slot time is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable target on short and intermediate routes.
The bottom of the list features more possession-based receivers who perform better on short and intermediate routes than in deep areas such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is a great choice for a sleeper this year since he'll be the primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are largely expected to be involved in more downfield targets. Hamler is expected to excel on shorter-to-mid and intermediate routes, since this is where he was at his best when playing for the Bills in 2021. He could be an excellent replacement for the departed wideout Jordan Matthews.
Percentage of Snaps In Slot
The proportion of snaps that a receiver makes in the slot is a good indicator of their ability to play deep routes. However, it's not always a true representation of a receiver's skill set as some receivers excel in the slot, but can't play deep and vice versa.
For example, the Eagles Alshon Jeffery is the leader in the league in the number of targets per game (4.8) but is ranked sixth in slot receiving score (58.5). This is because the majority of his targets come from outside and it's difficult to make a first down on an open, deep route.
On the other hand, certain receivers excel at playing inside and can't do much on the perimeter. For instance, the Panthers gave Robby Anderson 978 snaps last season, and he completed an astounding 74 percent of his slot routes as opposed to only 26% on boundary routes. That's a huge difference, and illustrates how much more efficient the player is when positioned in the slot.
Furthermore Rainbet is worth noting that the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines in the middle on the majority of his passing downs, and has a top-five slot receiving score (58.5). He also played 51% his perimeter routes and is an expert in one-on-1 coverage.
Speed receivers are more effective when they line up inside. They are able to be targeted further down the field, and often face one-on-one coverage. That's why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans, and Amari Cooper in the top five of our list.
On the other hand we have some outstanding slot cornerbacks like McDuffie and Moore in this group. McDuffie is the top player in the NFL in forced fumbles with seven, and Moore has the best tackle-stopping efficiency (-3.5) on this list. Spagnuolo made McDuffie's abilities more effective by using his slot to play nickel and dime packs and then shifting him to the outside when playing base defense. Additionally, Moore's ability to stop big run plays has been a tremendous advantage when playing in the slot.
Percentage of Snaps Outside
While the NFL's top receivers like Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's worth noting that their slot counterparts are also good. Wide receivers with an excellent slot grade score touchdowns in the same way as those on the perimeter. This is mainly because quarterbacks are more consistent in their targets when they throw to outside and slot wide receivers than other inside options such as tight ends and backfield passers.
It's also interesting to see a receiver such as CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022, as he plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of them. In actuality, he's running a higher number of slot routes than most of the players listed on this list. This is an excellent method to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps to explain why Lamb is the highest-graded receiver in our system.
Lamb also plays at the X-position and makes huge plays from outside. Lamb isn't as explosive as the other players on this list however he's still an elite wide receiver that is a good fit in the Cowboys scheme.
Mecole Hardman is yet another example of a player capable of posting big numbers on both types of targets. He is one of the best players in the league at catching throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a superb catcher who is contested.
Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He's lined up in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays to date. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA among cornerbacks who are aligned in the slot, which makes him a crucial player in the defense of his team. On the other hand, he's struggled to block passes from the outside and has allowed the negative EPA against these types of targets. This has been a result of playing alongside subpar linebackers and safeties that aren't able to match Hilton's size and speed. He also has a great ability to run routes.
